Making Charcloth
Posted by Dena Anderson on 7/10/2011 to Fire Starters
Start with 100% pure Cotton fabric. We used a White Tshirt. Color does not matter.
Cut into 2" or so sized pieces, doesn't need to be perfect or precise.

Buy a Candy or gum typw tin that seals completely around the edges. (Altoids, Sour, Cough drops, etc...)
We used the Tin from the Pico Pen. You could use a larger or smaller tin.
Poke a hole in the lid with a nail to let the pressure out. (It will blow the lid off if you dont)

                                                        Close up of hole!

                                                  Inside of box...

100% Cotton cloth in tin. One or two layer works best. More layers takes a lot longer to "cook" and may require opening and stirring half way.

You CAN "cook" it over a grill but it does best directly in a campfire.

The smoke signals the cooking has begun, continue until it no longer smokes. It might
flare up and catch fire from the hole. That is fine as well. continue until nothing is coming from the hole.

The finished product! Keep very dry. Any dampness will ruin its use. Correctly done it will
Hold a tender but never flame up.
